LAREDO, TX (March 17, 2026) — The South Texas Food Bank proudly announces the appointment of Laura Narvaez as its new Board Chair, ushering in a new chapter of leadership and continued commitment to fighting hunger across the region. Laura will take over on Wednesday, March 18 and will serve a two-year term leading the organization’s Board of Directors.
“I am honored to step into this role and continue supporting the South Texas Food Bank’s mission of fighting hunger and strengthening our community,” Laura said. “I look forward to working alongside the board, staff, and our generous supporters to ensure we continue making a meaningful difference for the families we serve."

Outgoing Board Chair Kevin Romo expressed confidence in Laura’s leadership as she prepares to take the helm of the hunger-relief organization that serves eight-counties, including two of the most impoverished counties in the State - Dimmit and Starr. The food bank has been servicing South Texas since 1989.
“Laura has a very positive and fun personality, and she truly loves the mission of the South Texas Food Bank,” Romo said. “I know she will do a great job leading the board and continuing the work that is so important to our community.”
The organization also extended its sincere gratitude to Romo for his dedicated service as Board Chair.
“Kevin’s commitment and deep experience working with the community have been invaluable to our organization,” said Alma Boubel, CEO of the South Texas Food Bank. “We are incredibly thankful for his leadership and the impact he has made during his tenure.”
Boubel also expressed excitement about the future under Laura’s leadership.
“Laura is smart, positive, and full of energy,” Boubel said. “I am very excited to work alongside her as we continue expanding our efforts to fight hunger and serve families across our region.”
Laura has been a dedicated member of the South Texas Food Bank’s Board since 2019, actively contributing to several committees, including the Marketing and Development Committee, where she has played an important role in helping expand community awareness and support for the organization’s mission.
“Being part of the Marketing and Development Committee is something I truly enjoy,” Laura shared. “It gives me the opportunity to connect with our community and promote the mission of the South Texas Food Bank, which is something I care deeply about.”
Professionally, Laura brings more than 20 years of experience as a speech-language pathologist, dedicating her career to helping individuals improve communication and enhance their quality of life. For the past 15 years, she has owned and operated a private practice serving the Laredo community.
Her commitment to service extends well beyond her profession. Laura is an active member of her local Rotary Club and serves as Secretary of the Laredo Stroke Support Group, demonstrating a long-standing dedication to community involvement and advocacy.
The South Texas Food Bank serves eight counties in South Texas and distributes millions of pounds of food each year to families, seniors, and children facing food insecurity.

The South Texas Food Bank is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to alleviate hunger in the South Texas region by collecting and distributing food through partner agencies and programs while creating awareness and educating the community on the realities of hunger throughout their eight-county service area: Webb, Zapata, Jim Hogg, Maverick, Dimmit, Val Verde, Kinney and Starr counties.
In FY 2024-25, the food bank distributed over 21 million pounds of food to food-insecure neighbors throughout our service area.
