About Kids Cafe
Since 2004, the South Texas Food Bank’s Kids Cafe Program has helped ensure that children across South Texas have access to nutritious food after the school day ends. The food bank was the first organization in the area to establish a coordinated network of children feeding sites, where meals would be cooked both on-site and off-site - all homestyle meals with regional flavor!
In 2019, the South Texas Food Bank became an approved sponsor of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) through the Texas Department of Agriculture. CACFP provides important support for eligible meals served through participating Kids Cafe locations, while additional South Texas Food Bank and philanthropic resources help us respond to child nutrition needs beyond available CACFP resources.
Through Kids Cafe, children and youth 18 and under can receive nutritious suppers and snacks at no cost at participating locations throughout our service area. Meals are prepared by the South Texas Food Bank’s kitchen team in accordance with applicable nutrition and food-safety requirements and are transported to participating sites using equipment designed to maintain safe food temperatures.
Kids Cafe is about more than providing a meal. Participating locations offer children safe and welcoming places to eat, socialize, learn and grow. Depending on the site, children may also have access to enrichment activities, tutoring, educational programs, internet access or simply a quiet place to complete their homework.
During Fiscal Year 2024–25, 15,894 children were enrolled in Kids Cafe across 25 active sites, demonstrating the important role the program continues to play in addressing childhood hunger throughout South Texas.
By providing children with reliable access to nutritious food in supportive community settings, Kids Cafe helps reduce hunger as a barrier to learning, participation and healthy development.

About CACFP
The South Texas Food Bank is an approved sponsor of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) At-Risk Afterschool Program, administered in Texas by the Texas Department of Agriculture and funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Through CACFP, eligible afterschool sites provide children with nutritious meals and snacks in conjunction with educational or enrichment activities. Participating sites must meet program eligibility and operating requirements, and meals served through CACFP must meet established federal nutrition standards.
2025-2026 Child Nutrition Program Partners:
CACFP provides an essential foundation for Kids Cafe; however, as needs arise, federal support does not always encompass every child; or, an urgent and outstanding program need. Private philanthropic support helps the South Texas Food Bank bridge those gaps and continue providing nutritious meals to children experiencing food insecurity.
Support from partners such as the D.D. Hachar Charitable Trust and C.R. England gives STFB the flexibility to respond as participation and community needs change, helping provide supplementary child nutrition services in underserved South Texas communities. Together, these resources help ensure that hunger does not become another barrier to a child’s health, learning and development.
