Grant Writer

PAY: Starting at $40 - $45K (Pay may be commensurate with experience)

Position Overview

 

Under the supervision of the Director of Development, the Grant Writer will be responsible for conducting prospect research; developing and writing grant proposals to foundations, corporations, federal/state/local governments and other grant-making organizations; and, will persuasively communicate the South Texas Food Bank’s mission and programs to potential funders.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

As part of the fundraising team, the grant writer’s focus is to raise funds that will support food bank programs and operations, in order to do this, the main duties and responsibilities of this position are, but not be limited to:

 

  • Primary responsibilities include preparation of proposals, Letters of Intent, and grant applications, and performance of responsible professional and administrative work in researching, identifying, developing and responding to public and private grant opportunities in areas that support South Texas Food Bank programs (Prospecting).

  • Under the guidance of the CEO and the Director of Development, match potential funding opportunities with existing programs and projects.

  • Support ongoing federal grant opportunities and search for available government funding.

  • Work with key stakeholders to develop a clear and thorough strategic plan for each grant.

  • Collecting, analyzing, and reporting data on the performance of program activities that are funded by federal, state, and private funding agencies.

  • Work with the Projects Coordinator and Finance Department to gather all necessary information to execute grants and to report to funders on current grant-funded programs.

  • Coordinate funder cultivation with Director of Development.

  • Maintain an active grants calendar and updated donor portfolios and database.

  • Create fundraising instruments and materials such as the Annual Impact Report and funding opportunity catalog.

  • Assist with other fundraising projects as requested by organization.

  • Perform any other duties assigned by the CEO and/or Director of Development.

 

 

Other Responsibilities

 

  • Stay current on grant writing initiatives and best practices through independent study, participation in seminars, and workshops

  • Follow ethical fundraising standards

  • Become knowledgeable about Feeding America strategic initiatives, goals and studies, including participation in webinars, and other FA-offered enhancements to gain knowledge of peer food banks, Feeding America network expectations concerning grant submissions and reporting

  • Duties as assigned by the CEO and/or Director of Development including participation in food bank’s special events, fundraising fairs and team activities.

 

 

Knowledge and Skills:

 

  • Strong formal/business writing skills - ability to write clear, structured, articulated, and persuasive letters and proposals.

  • Knowledge of and experience with donor data management systems.

  • Data collection and analysis (Quantitative and qualitative)

  • Ability to meet deadlines.

  • Strong communication skills

  • Highly organized and efficient

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team

  • Ability to maintain a schedule and meet deadlines in a timely manner

  • Ability to interpret financial data and prepare budgets and financial grant reports

  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality with sensitive information that may be needed for some grants such as but not limited to employee information, upcoming projects, and related financials

  • Knowledge of fundraising and grant information sources.

  • Experience with proposal writing and institutional donors.

  • Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies.

  • Knowledge with research techniques for fundraising prospect research.

 

 

General Qualifications

  • Ability to maintain effective and positive public and coworker relationships

  • Must be able to work within an organizational structure and follow protocol.

  • Have reliable transportation

  • Have a valid driver’s license

  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug screening

 

 

Minimum Requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, English or related field

  • 2 – 3 years successful grant writing or similar experience preferred

  • Background in fundraising, communications, or budgeting preferred

  • Understanding of grant funding policies and procedures and applicable local, state, and federal regulations preferred

  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite, spreadsheets, databases, word processing and other computer applications

  • Knowledge of QuickBooks a plus but not necessary

  • Must be able to work full time

  • Must be able to work evening and Saturdays, as needed

  • Minimal travel outside Webb County may be required

  • Must comply with the company's dress code

This position is mostly an office-based position.
