Laredo, TX (September 11, 2018) With an effort to highlight a prominent issue that millions of Americans face, the City of Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz proclaimed September as Hunger Action Month.
Food bank friends from numerous agencies and pantries attended the proclamation at the City Hall council chambers. Many of them shared what they could not accomplish on an empty stomach. Some of the most prevalent issues shared were that on an empty stomach they could not think, focus, work or help others.
“If it is certainly difficult for us to function as an adult on an empty stomach, imagine how much more difficult it would be for a child who has not had a meal to eat," Saenz said.
About 22,000 children receive nutritious food product from programs such as the Kids Café Program and the Adopt a Family program. Through the Kids Café program, children are able to satisfy their empty tummies with warm meals and take advantage of the educational value provided at various Kids Café sites during after school hours.
“As the demand for services grows, the need for help does as well," said Alma Boubel, the food bank's executive director. "During the month of September, we would like to shine light on the hunger issues that affect our South Texas communities. We would like to thank those who have been part our mission throughout the years and I would like to encourage others to do the same.”
