South Texas Food Bank Celebrates Grand Opening of New Building

Picture
(Laredo, TX): The South Texas Food Bank celebrated the grand opening of their new, state of the art facility with a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house on Friday morning.

The food bank relocated from a 34,000 square foot warehouse to a 93,000 square foot space that includes two large ware-houses, an industrial kitchen and renovated office space in January of this year. The move came about as a result of rising demand for the food bank’s services.

“This month was the first month in our thirty-year history that we surpassed one million pounds of food distributed,” stated Alma Boubel, Executive Director of the South Texas Food Bank.  “That means that we are reaching more families, more children and more individuals who need our services. It means we are becoming more effective at fulfilling our mission of fighting hunger.”

For the last three decades, The South Texas Food Bank has helped countless families, children and individuals in need of food assistance in the South Texas region. The South Texas Food Bank services a total of 14, 023 sq. miles made up of eight counties including Webb, Zapata, Jim Hogg, Maverick, Dimmit, Val Verde, Kinney and Starr. Currently, the food bank distributes over one million pounds of food per month, feeding an average of 65,000 food insecure individuals per month.

Boubel says that she expects these numbers to rise over the coming years due to population growth. She adds that the food bank is prepared to continue growing and expanding its services to better meet the needs of the community which it serves.

“The food bank belongs to the community,” Boubel added. “As long as the community needs us, we will continue to be here.”
